From Peak Performance to Optimal Performance - What Every Leader Needs to Know About Sustainable Success
Aug 03, 2026
Most professionals have been taught to chase peak performance - to push harder, achieve more, and treat rest as a reward rather than a strategy. But peak performance has a ceiling, and it is called burnout. In this episode of the Expert to Authority Show with Simone Vincenzi, Dr Rana Al-Falaki reframes the entire conversation: introducing NAIL-IT Leadership as a system that combines the soft skills of self-leadership with wellbeing intelligence - not as separate disciplines, but as a single, integrated framework for what she calls optimal performance. The distinction matters more than most leaders realise. Peak performance takes you up - and eventually tips you over. Optimal performance takes you up and keeps you there.
Central to this conversation is the PLAY model - a three-part framework measuring whether you are genuinely performing optimally across productivity, living a life in balance, and experiencing real joy and fulfilment. Because as Dr Rana explains, you can be hitting every professional target and still be performing sub-optimally if the other two are missing. The episode also introduces a deceptively simple yet powerful self-awareness exercise called the Three by Three - asking three people from different areas of your life to describe you in three words, then comparing their responses to how you would describe yourself. The gap between those answers is often where the real leadership work begins.

THE THREE BY THREE EXERCISE - TRY IT YOURSELF
This is one of the most powerful authenticity tools from the NAIL-IT Leadership system, and you can start it today.
Step one: Reveal: Write down three words that describe who you are. Be honest, not aspirational.
Step two: Request: Ask three people from different areas of your life - someone who knows you well personally, a colleague or professional contact, and ideally someone relatively new to your world - to describe you in three words. Let them know you will not take offence; you are genuinely curious.
Step three: Recognise: Place all the responses side by side. Circle any words that match your own. Notice the gaps.
The consistency - or lack of it - between how you see yourself and how others experience you is one of the most honest mirrors available to any leader. It is not about judgement. It is about awareness. And awareness, as the NAIL-IT Leadership system demonstrates consistently, is always where sustainable transformation begins.
